Helambu trek is one of the most perfect short treks that falls in the Langtang region of Nepal. In spite of being so near to Kathmandu, the Helambu region remains generally un-spoilt. The hyolmo culture of high mountain people, the greenery of rhododendron and bamboo forests, sublime waterfalls and of course the snowcapped Himalayas make Helambu trek one of the most contrasting treks near Kathmandu. You can begin this trek either from Melamchi bazar about 60 km from Kathmandu or Sundarijal 26 km from Kathmandu. After an hour’s walk from Sundarijal, we enter Shivapuri National Park. The trek continues along the Chisopani, Kutumsang, Thadepati, and Sermathang, and ends at the Melamchi Pul Bazar in the Helambu region. After that, the trek passes through thick mountain forests with great Himalayan views. You will also be able to observe some beautiful rice terraces and several magnificent Buddhist monasteries through the trek.
The beautiful view of different mountains such as Langtang, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Rolwaling, and Gauri Shankar adds another mesmerizing experience along with alpine meadows, Buddhist villages, rivers, waterfalls, glaciers, forests, meadows all at once. The rich cultural heritage and hospitality of the Sherpa people who inhabit in the Helambu region present a warm welcome to the trekkers. You can find many teahouses accommodations along the route as well as the Buddhist monasteries, pilgrims. Helambu region is also famous for its delicious and juicy apples as well.
Helambu trek is an easy and enjoyable trip organized at the average altitude of 3500m. In this trek, we go along the south ridge through Sermathang, down to the river at Melamchi. It is the site of a mega project to bring drinking water to Kathmandu via a series of tunnels. Finally, the trek concludes with a drive back to Kathmandu via Melamchi Bazaar through Panchkhal.
Meet at Kathmandu Airport
We will receive you at the Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport and escort you to your hotel. After you have had some rest and refreshment, you will be invited to visit our office for a briefing about your program. We will help you check your equipment and facilitate the processing of other necessary items required such as National Park Permits etc.
A full day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu valley
We will take you on a sightseeing tour around the Kathmandu valley after your morning breakfast at the hotel. You will visit the Hindu temple complex at Pashupatinath (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Boudhanath temple, the biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath. A visit to Patan Durbar square will enchant you with its famous fine arts and historical architecture whereas you’ll enjoy and love Swayambhunath temple which is also known as the Monkey Temple. After that, you will have time to explore the local area, have dinner.
Drive to Sundarijal (1350m) from Kathmandu and trekking to Chisopani (2140m)
After an hour drive from Kathmandu, you will reach Sundarijal, a starting point of the trek. From Sundarijal the trail climb up and we will enter through the Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve. The trail proceeds uphill through the forest to meet the Mulkharka Villages with the tenants of Tamang people, climbing on the forest of rhododendron and oaks. After passing Borlang Bhanjyang the trail goes downhill to Chisopani (2140m). The mountain views are excellent from here and you can witness the amazing views of Annapurna to Everest. Trekking from Chisopani to Gul Bhanjyang (2140 m)
The trails run out of the villages and continue through a pine plantation before arriving at Pati Bhanjyang, a lovely small village. From here the trail goes through small chorten, fields, and forest mostly up and downhill before arriving Gul Bhanjyang (2140m), overnight in lodge.
Gulbhanjyang trekking to Tharepati (3597m)
Today to trail steady climb through prickly-leaved oak forest with excellent views of the mountains and the Helambu valley, Following a ridgeline, the trail continues via lightly populated forest to Magen Goth from where the view of Langtang and Gosaikund peak is stunning, Above Magin Goth the trails climbs steeply through dense pine forest passing several chorten and ruined huts. When we arrive at Tharepati Rise early for excellent close-up views of Gosainkunda and surrounding high mountains. Overnight at lodge.
Tharepati trekking to Melamchi Gaon (2640m)
A short, steep descent through blended fir and rhododendron forest rich with bird life. There you can hear crashing waterfalls sound from the rocky gullies below as you approach Melamchi Gaon. Overnight in lodge.
Melamchi Gaon trekking to Tarkeghyang (2560m)
The trail continues to descend steeply to the valley floor, where you can have a well-earned dip in the crystal-clear river before completing the short and mild ascent up the other side of the valley. Tarkeghyang is an incredible place to observe a mixture of culture and spirituality and also exaggerate an 18th century Gompa with a huge brass prayer wheel. Overnight in lodge.
Tarkegyang trekking to Sermathang (2621m)
A flat pleasant walk through the beautiful forest takes you to Shermathang which is a Sherpa village that different from the Sherpa of Everest region. The villages provide good views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gosainkunda and Rolwaling in a clear day and even Everest in a distance. Overnight at lodge.
Trekking from Shermathang to Melamchi Bazaar (828m) and finally a drive back to Kathmandu
Today the trail gradually descends to Melamchi Pul Bazaar through meadows and cultivated fields. You come across several old villages on the way with the spectacular Mountain View and will get to interact with local and friendly people. Finally, you will be escorted back to Kathmandu by bus or private vehicle. In the evening you will be able to join Nepali cultural dinner. Overnight in Kathmandu hotel.
We will take you to the Kathmandu Airport to catch your flight home.
